Measuring readability" readibility "Reading

Infonomía informational laws ( only accessible to subscribers) I come across that provided by Jorge Juan Fernández: Gunning Fog Index *
The Gunning Fog Index is an index to measure the "readability" (easy to read?) of a text. It represents approximately the average age required to read a text, ie the age must have a reader to understand what they are reading.

The formula is: [(average number of words per sentence +% of words with 3 syllables) * 0.4].
ideal score is 7 or 8. Above 12, it is very difficult to read.

The Bible, Shakespeare and Mark Twain has Gunning rates around 6. Time, Newsweek and Wall Street Journal averaged around 11.

web pages should be between 11 and 15.

The formula was developed by Robert Gunning ( " The Technique of Clear Writing ," rev. Ed. New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1973 ) and is very acceptable in writing courses United Nations to know how heavy are their reports.

surprised me at first glance two things:
  • That does not take into account factors such as lexical field that forms the text of the reading and pay attention only to the number of syllables in each word.

  • be assumed that the ideal ratio was between 7 and 8 to specify which web pages should be between 11 and 15.

I doubt that this formula contains the solution to increase the number of readers (or rather of readers satisfied with what they read), but based on its principles could improve (as authors) the readability of our post, taking care of writing of the post.

* In the text the word FOX, considering the rest of the content, I understand that this is a typo and they are referring to the word FOG = fog.
